November: clocks have been

turned back and a layer

of wet snow on windshield where

wipers hide beneath, unseen.

Somewhere between

creaking steps on early morning stairs,

and dry scraping kitchen chairs,

and slamming porch screen,

bread toasts and a teapot steams.

On Route 30, the wind plays truth or dare

with October's leaves while trees

shake off autumn. Little streams

of rain trickle down desert streets, and bare

birch branches claw at a wintry breeze.
